What Is HID?
HID stands for "High Intensity Discharge". HID lights get their name from the intense white light produced by the electrical discharge.
HID lights are a different type of lighting technology utilized in automobiles for greater effectiveness and greater efficiency. Unlike Halogen (or incandescent) bulbs, HID bulbs do not have filaments.

Instead of heating a filament as standard halogen bulbs do, HID bulbs create light by bridging an arc between two electrodes similar to the energy transfer of lightning. The arc stimulates a mixture of Xenon gases and metallic salts, producing a phenomenal bright white beam of light approximately 3x brighter than conventional halogen illumination, while lasting 10x longer

Light bulbs are usually filled with a mixture of gasses, selected to help retard the evaporation of the filament and to minimize heat loss from the filament. Argon works OK for this, krypton works better, and xenon better still. The better gasses are more expensive, of course.

Halogen, on the other hand, isn't a particular element or chemical. Halogen bulbs include small amounts of one of the halogen family of elements (usually iodine) in the fill gas. The halogen gas in the bulb can actually bond temporarily with evaporated filament metal, and redeposit the metal back on the filament. This extends the filament life and keeps the bulb's glass free of the filament deposits that make other bulbs turn gray as they age.

In any case, the goal of both strategies is the same: to allow the filament to have a reasonably long life when burning at the highest possible temperature, burning more brightly and more efficiently.

When watching this video note that the HID is pointed for distance and the halogen is pointed down. But the HID in the front of the tractor...... has a wide viewing area and a clean light source... so its easier to take a shot at a coyote with.. :no2:

My take. With what Ive see so far form this kit. I recommend doing it. The only downside is now you may see the deer in the meridian that you didn't see before.

I also looked into doing a higher grade bulb, I opted to do only the 6000k because the when you start to get into the blues or even the violets you loose effective lighting. Here is a chart that helps show what i mean

I've always wondered about the HID"s. Have you actually installed it yet and is it a pretty direct replacement or do you need to do any type of mods to install it?

I did insall it. in daylight it was still 100% visible a clear outline on the wall. I also shut off all the lights in the shop and tried it late at night (Before and after) Noticable is an understatment.

It is also a very flat line on lows, even flatter than it was stock. On high beams ....... it was so bright i think i had a seizure? :thatsilly:

No it is a direct replacement.

However. There is a balast that has to be mounted some where. I put mine above the front head. There is a wiring harnes and relay all prewired. If you
1 plug the wires from the new headlight in
2 run the single red wire to battery (have to lengthen it 8 inches or so)
3 run the black one to frame (ground)
4 plug connector to headlight in bike to plug on harness

then your done.

i didn't, my brother got an 03' Vegas and he wants a HID light on there. I'll either post pic's or have him jump on here himself.

by the way, i love the new look of your bike!!! that paint is friggin awesome! oh yeah, i found a solution for my seat, i found an online "how to" guide on cutting and forming motorcycle seats. i didn't drop it down any cause i figured that'd put even more of a kink in my knee's, but i cut an extra 1"1/2 off the tailbone foam and eliminated the hot spot on my booty haha
